Drinking alcohol is not against the law if you’re an adult of drinking age. Why is alcohol consumption at the Riverview Amenities prohibited?
Liability is the primary concern. There are risks that can be amplified when someone is intoxicated, such as slipping and falling. The association could potentially be exposed to liability if we do not take sufficient steps to prevent or stop underage consumption of alcohol. The POA and Allied Universal Security are not in the business of determining who is of drinking age and who is not or who is intoxicated and who is not.
Another concern is the steep fines for littering in the waterways and marshlands. Over the past year, security reports that litter is often left behind or thrown into the marshlands. The vast majority of this litter that has been observed in and around the marshlands at the dock have been alcohol containers. It is expensive to retrieve this rubbish from the marsh and the POA could face fines for the litter.
A few additional points of reference:
- The pools at the Dunes West Club do not permit alcohol
- Carolina Park does not permit alcohol at the pool, pavilion, or common areas
- The Mt. Pleasant Pier at Memorial Waterfront Park does not permit alcohol on the dock nor does the boardwalk at Shem Creek Park.
