Which is it: privacy gates or security gates?
The DWPOA usually refers to our gates as privacy gates for the sake of consistency, and to not give a false impression of “total” security. The gate system that’s been in place at Dunes West since the early 1990s provides a measure of both privacy and security. Both are outcomes of “access control.” There is no such thing as absolute privacy or security, or any single level of control appropriate for all situations.
The more stringent an access control policy, the more privacy and security. To achieve a sense of security normally associated with military installations or sensitive industrial plants, the level of vetting of people for entry would be inappropriate and impractical for a residential development. Instead, our gate system is a compromise that balances assuring individuals seeking entry have legitimate needs to access gated sections of Dunes West against the ease of a public road where any vehicle can enter a neighborhood at any time, with no questions asked.
Dunes West doesn’t allow vendors access to gated sections to go “door to door” and, in general, the people and vehicles you see in the neighborhoods should either be residents, guests, or vendors with a valid purpose for being on the premises.
Finally, if you SEE something, SAY something! Suspicious, illegal behavior should be reported to MPPD. If you’re seeing a vendor or contractor in a place where they don’t appear to be performing actual work, call the POA office or Security.
